What drives the Range Rover's resale value

The fifth-generation Range Rover, on sale in India since 2022, remains the benchmark full-size luxury SUV, built on JLR's bespoke MLA-Flex platform with a choice of mild-hybrid diesel and petrol inline-six engines, a plug-in hybrid, and the 4.4-litre BMW-sourced V8 in Autobiography and SV trims. Volumes in India are tiny, just a few hundred units a year, so every used example is effectively a bespoke sale rather than part of a liquid market.

Ownership cost is the dominant force in Range Rover resale: routine service, parts, and any mechanical issue outside warranty are priced at true luxury-import levels, and this scares off a large share of otherwise-willing used buyers once the factory warranty and any extended-warranty cover run out. As a result, the percentage depreciation curve is considerably steeper than almost any mass-market SUV, even though the absolute rupee values involved are enormous.

Buyers for used Range Rovers are concentrated almost entirely in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, and Bengaluru, where the combination of high-net-worth demand, authorized service infrastructure, and import-car culture supports a functioning resale market. Outside these three cities, demand drops sharply and sellers typically have to transport the car to a major metro to find a buyer at a reasonable price.

Diesel variants have historically resold a little better than equivalent petrol in India because of their efficiency advantage at this size and weight, but the V8 petrol Autobiography and SV trims hold a disproportionate enthusiast following that keeps their percentage depreciation slightly shallower than the six-cylinder diesel and petrol variants beneath them, despite the V8's much higher running costs.

How TheResaleValue calculates these numbers

Resale bands aggregate wholesale transaction prices across Indian metros, refreshed monthly. Age is calculated in whole years from the manufacturing date on the RC. Kilometre bands are self-reported and rounded to the nearest band. City adjustments apply an RTO-level multiplier on the all-India mid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the resale value of a Range Rover in India?

A well-maintained Range Rover retains about 58% of its price after two years and roughly 33% after five years, based on transaction data across Indian metros as of September 2026, well below the large-SUV segment average of about 52% at five years, reflecting the steep depreciation typical of ultra-luxury imports once warranty cover lapses.

Why does the Range Rover depreciate faster than mass-market SUVs?

High running and maintenance costs outside warranty sharply narrow the pool of willing used buyers, which pushes percentage depreciation well above what a comparably priced mass-market SUV would see, even though the absolute price involved is far larger.

Where can I get the best resale price for a Range Rover?

Mumbai and Delhi NCR currently trade at roughly +4% above the national mid, with Bengaluru close behind at about +3%, since used-Range-Rover demand is concentrated almost entirely in these three cities. Outside them, this data shows resale value falling 3-4% below the national mid or more.

Does the diesel Range Rover hold value better than the petrol?

Diesel variants have historically held a slight efficiency-driven edge in resale over the six-cylinder petrol, though the V8 Autobiography and SV trims maintain a disproportionate enthusiast following that keeps their percentage depreciation only slightly behind the six-cylinder variants despite much higher running costs.

How much does a Range Rover depreciate per year?

A Range Rover loses around 28% of its value in the first year alone and continues depreciating 10-12% annually through year five, landing at roughly 33% retention, a markedly steeper curve than almost any mass-market SUV sold in India.
